Finding Used Wedding Dresses

If you are on a tight budget you may be considering purchasing a used wedding dress. If you leave your options open and allow plenty of time for used dress shopping, you can wear the wedding gown of your dreams while saving several hundred dollars.

Be aware when you buy used — or any gown that isn’t straight from the designer — that it may be in less than pristine condition. Expect to have it cleaned or to make minor repairs.

Before looking at used gowns, research the various designers’ styles so you know which brands tend to have “your look.” While you are doing this, also decide what features you want your wedding dress to have. For example:

– What general style do you prefer (a-line, mermaid, etc.)?
– What color will your gown be (ivory, white, pink, etc.)?
– What necklines are acceptable to you (sweetheart, halter, etc.)?
– How long will your gown be and will it have a train?
– What type of detailing will it have (seed pearls, rhinestones, beading, etc.)?

Also, like everyday women’s clothing, sizes vary depending on the brand. Each designer publishes a measurement chart. Using those charts, figure out your size in each of your preferred designers’ gowns (Remember that in all likelihood your wedding dress will need to be altered, whether you purchase it used or straight from the designer).

After completing your research, you are ready to begin looking for a used wedding gown. There are several places to find used gowns. You’ll want to set up notices, put in requests, and monitor each of them:

– Consignment stores can be a good used gown source. If you are lucky enough to have a local used formal wear store, alert the owner that you are looking for a dress.

– Craigslist is a very active used-goods marketplace. Find your local Craigslist, open a free account, and make an “item wanted” post. Do searches for the terms “wedding gown” and “wedding dress” in the clothing section — and monitor new listings often — to see what is currently being sold.

– There are several Websites that specialize in used wedding attire and/or create a buyer/seller marketplace (hint: search “used wedding dresses” or something similar in your favorite search engine).

– Buy at auction. By far the largest auction site is eBay, and they have an extensive bridal gown section. Many were worn once or are sales samples.

– While not technically “used,” bridal store floor samples are a great bargain. Most stores sell their last-season samples for $99 and up.

Other Ways of Finding Inexpensive Wedding Gowns

If your heart is set on a designer dress, but you don’t have a designer wallet, you might find a designer sample dress for a fraction of the cost at one of the above-mentioned floor sample sales.

You could also buy a designer duplicate. These resemble — but are not completely identical to — an existing designer gown. In general, you order the gown based on a photo of an existing dress. A seamstress, usually in an Asian country, then recreates the general look of the pictured gown — often for around $100. There are both positives and negatives to this approach. Whether a dress like this is right for you depends on your own priorities: If you expect the same quality of material and exact detailing as a designer original, you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a way to very inexpensively purchase a formal wedding dress that will look good on you for a day, then consider this option.

A final way to find an inexpensive bridal gown is to consider a white or ivory bridesmaid dress to wear as an informal wedding dress. Because bridesmaid dresses are generally much less expensive than bridal gowns, you can save hundreds of dollars with this approach.

Three Essentials For Selecting The Proper Wedding Dress

When selecting the proper or correct bride’s dress for you, many factors come into play. First of all, one has to take into consideration the body shape of the bride to be when choosing your dress. Are you short, tall, slim or a bit on the chunky side?

Let’s say you are short, a sexy dress in an empire style is always a good choice because the illusion of height is given. Give careful attention to not having too much width of the skirt to the bottom of the hem, otherwise it will take away from the effect of the height that you want to achieve. Better yet, choose a straight skirt.

The empire style is also a great choice for someone who is a little stout; although a bell skirt style with just a little bit of flare gradually widening to the bottom of the hem is the better choice. Just enough fabric, to fit nicely over the waist without the the dress being neither too tight nor having too much fullness so as not too give the look of added weight to the waistline. This style of bride’s dress will divert the eye of the beholder toward the upper part of the garment. So why not choose a lower cut empire sexy dress that is embellished with some lace or beads. Enhancing your best asset, be it a beautiful face and or bosom is the way to draw the eye away from the waist. Never wear a waist fitted gathered gown.

This style will cut the body in half if you are either short or stout or both and leaving you with just the opposite effect that you are trying to achieve. For the tall person, you can wear just about anything your heart desires. The tall bride can select any sexy formal dress be it hour glass, box, bell or gathered from a natural waistline, even a cheap designer wedding dress because her body can carry it off , providing she is not too stout. She will look stunning in just about anything. The only style that the tall bride may want to avoid is the long thin straight wedding dress, as this will emphasize her height. That is fine if her husband to be is equally tall.

Secondly, where you are planning to be married is something else that needs to be considered. Will you be married formally in a church or informally on the beach? If you have chosen a beach wedding, a more casual wedding gown or beach wedding dress can be chosen. It can be any length, whether short, in between or long and flowing. It can even be a cheap wedding dress.
Bridal lingerie is always a personal matter. How much or how little is up to you. Just make sure that it is sexy. Perhaps you may want to get away from wearing a layered slip or any slip at all..
Whether getting married in a church or on the beach, your wedding day should be special and a day you will always want to remember. So ladies, choose a bride’s dress that that has a cut and style that is right and proper for you. If you do so, you will be picture perfect.

My Quick And Easy List Of Cheap Wedding Reception Ideas

In a previous article I mentioned that you could Google just about anywhere and get a list cheap wedding ideas. Well this is one of those articles and one of those lists. I will write the first 10 things that come to my head (which probably means I think about them the most). I will add to them later, but for now here is my quick and easy list of cheap wedding reception ideas, brainstorming style!

  1. avoid buying things labeled as “wedding”. As an example “wedding private dance lessons” could be $200 per hour. But go to a ballroom studio for “ballroom private lessons” and you may only pay $80 to $100. That’s a 50% discount. If you are able to apply that to EVERYTHING then your wedding budget just got cut in half.
  2. shop for flowers in season. Avoid costly flowers not in season
  3. keep it simple. cakes, wedding dresses, wedding favors.
  4. simplify your menu. Eliminating a course or a choice can trim a bit. People will remember more how good the food tastes then what was actually served. Quality over quantity. So you may not want the steak or shrimp over chicken. (GO TO FOOD TASTINGS!)
  5. borrow or barter. can you borrow a fancy sports car for transportation? if you own your own business (like website design) can you barter with a wedding vendor?
  6. Google “wholesale”. wholesale flowers, wholesale wedding favors, wholesale florists to go for cheap wedding flowers.
  7. book a year or more in advance. You can nail down this year’s prices for next year’s wedding
  8. buy online, especially at eBay
  9. buy last season’s dress (April-May or October-November) which should be a cheap wedding dress compared to this year’s models
  10. booking off-season
  11. booking off-day (not Saturday)
  12. booking off-time (not evening). Some of my friends hold Saturday brunch weddings. With the right elegant setting it can be quite fabulous!
  13. for your photographer, get the negatives or cd of original images, no need to purchase prints or photo books. If you’re going to cut costs on your photographer, better to pay for high quality originals with no photos then lower quality originals and lots of prints.
  14. buy a non-wedding cake that is three layers instead of a “wedding” cake
  15. donate and write off (flowers, dresses, musicians who are non-profit, churches that are non-profit, venues that are non-profit)

Okay I lied and went to fifteen cheap wedding reception ideas instead of the previously mentioned ten. I will write some more in the future.

The final idea, because I think it is just darn awesome, is from Erica Yoon’s Amazing Wedding Planning. And it has to do with the honeymoon:

“If you want a fun, exciting and cheap honeymoon, go to Las Vegas, Nevada. If you’ve heard about all the cheap gourmet food and services, I can tell you that it’s true. I happen to live just outside of Las Vegas, and it has so many gourmet foods and services that I love to jump in the car and hit the buffets for dinner.”

If you think about it, it’s not a bad idea. You are saving money on your honeymoon which frees up some money for the budget.

I hope you got a lot out of these cheap wedding reception ideas, and that you were able to take at least one of them away to save you some money!

Congratulations and happy wedding planning!

Be Careful in Choosing the Wedding Dress

Bright brides don’t compromise with a homely gown to a tight budget. Actually, you have the chance buy a brilliant dress for your wedding with a crazy amount of budget saved. Want to find out how? There are some practical guidelines that will help you out of the jungle while buying an ideal wedding dress.

First, find the right season for shopping. You can save a lot if you purchase your dress during periods like end of financial year sales. These are good times for you to pick up a bargain.

Secondly, it is easy to find a lot of dresses for wedding stores and wholesale stores on the line that are engaged in selling second-hand wedding dresses. Some dresses are perfect concerning quality and style. It’s not hard to imagine how the owners cherished the dresses. In an opposite way, if you want to purchase a brand new dress-either custom made or bought, you can choose to sell them on the line after your wedding. And if your dress that you have purchased for wedding is not outdated, you can almost count on half your money back.

Thirdly, it is recommendable for purchasers that find the tacky beading, and massive trains on the cheap wedding dresses unacceptable, to do some alteration to the original models. It is quite possible to obtain a nice and chic wedding dress by removing some ugly details.

If you try these tips above I am sure this can help you save thousands. With recession on one hand and increasing inflation on the other it’s always advised to plan ahead. Finally wedding is a certainty which is bound to happen so its best to keep your eyes open for a good bargain through out the year especially in the year closing sales, which knows you, could stumble across great discounts.
